Honestly, I found the tour to be a fantastic way to get an overview of the most relevant points in both neighborhoods and then return on your own to explore what interests you the most.
If you have limited time in the city or it’s your first visit, you’ll likely want to focus on the main tourist attractions.

Copacabana and Ipanema Free Walking Tour
The Free Walking Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema lasts about two hours and starts at General Osório Square in Ipanema.
It passes by several key locations in both neighborhoods. However, the tour doesn’t focus solely on tourist attractions.
Many of the monuments and historical sites included in the itinerary often go unnoticed, even by locals. So, taking part in the tour really makes a difference!
I’ve passed by General Osório Square countless times on my way to the subway and never stopped to appreciate the Saracuras fountain, which has an interesting old history—but I won’t spoil it for you. Curious? Go take the tour! Haha!
The itinerary
The neighborhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema are mainly connected by two main roads: Gomes Carneiro Street and Queen Elizabeth Avenue.
There’s even a region known as “Copanema.” Honestly, even for locals, it’s hard sometimes to know where one neighborhood ends and the other begins.
After leaving General Osório Square, the tour follows the Ipanema beachfront, making brief stops for explanations.
The first highlight in Ipanema is the Laura Alvim House, an important cultural center in the neighborhood.
The statue of the Brazilian singer Tom Jobim and the view of the Arpoador Stone, at the edge of the beach (where the two neighborhoods meet), are also major highlights of this part of the tour.
Since you can’t access the Copacabana beachfront directly from the Ipanema beachfront, you need to take a “shortcut” through Garota de Ipanema Park.
In Copacabana, the first highlight is the Fortress, inaugurated in 1916, which you can visit for free on Tuesdays.
Other highlights include the super cute and Instagram-worthy statues of the singer Dorival Caymmi and the writer Carlos Drummond de Andrade, among many other surprises and curiosities.

How to Participate in the Free Walking Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema?
The Free Walking Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema is offered by Civitatis, a partner of Turista FullTime, and operated by the local company Tour by Foot.
To join, simply sign up using the link on this post. No advance payment or credit card is required. You only need to provide your email to confirm your participation and your phone number for emergencies.
There’s no need to print a confirmation. Just show up at the meeting point on the specified date and time, give your name, and you’re all set. It’s all very simple and convenient.
How much does the Walking Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema cost?
In almost every city around the world where this activity takes place, it’s known as a “Free Tour” or “Free Walking Tour.” True to its name, payment is voluntary.
So, at the end of the tour, you can set the price and give the amount you consider appropriate.
While payment is not obligatory, it is a very appreciated gesture, as guiding is a professional activity.
All guides have training in Tourism and are registered with Cadastur (a Brazilian Tourist Service Providers Registry). The amount you contribute is entirely up to you, but in Rio de Janeiro, I’ve seen guides suggest between 40 and 50 reais.
Typically, people leave between 20 and 50 reais. Some guides even carry card machines for payments, but cash is the most common way to tip.
Meeting Point and Practical Tips
The meeting point for the Free Walking Tour through Ipanema and Copacabana is at Exit A of the General Osório metro station.
The tour currently runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 PM, but days and times may change, so it’s a good idea to check with the company in advance.
The licensed guide will likely be wearing a company T-shirt and carrying an ID badge with a photo and full name issued by Cadastur.
Since Rio de Janeiro attracts many international tourists, the tour is offered in Spanish and English. You can indicate your preference when you book it.
The tour I joined was led by the Uruguayan guide Maria Fernanda Rodriguez, who kindly offered to explain in Portuguese if I had any trouble understanding.
However, it went very smoothly, likely because she’s been living in Rio for over 10 years and speaks Portuguese well. I’m sure her familiarity with both languages helped a lot.
It turned out to be an excellent way to brush up on my Spanish while visiting tourist spots—it felt like getting two experiences for the price of one! I loved it!
Delays and Cancellations
There is a 15-minute grace period, after which the group starts the tour, and anyone who hasn’t arrived is left behind.
The tour requires a minimum of three participants to proceed.
This is why providing your email and phone number is necessary; you’ll be informed if the tour is canceled due to low attendance.
However, I once saw a guide conduct a tour in downtown Rio de Janeiro with just one tourist because there was a large group for the Spanish tour and only one person for the English tour.
For the tour I participated in, 26 people registered, but only 15 showed up. It wasn’t a problem because many had made reservations.
What to Bring for the Tour?
For any tour in Rio de Janeiro, it’s essential to be prepared for high temperatures. Believe me: even in the winter months, temperatures can exceed 30 degrees Celsius.
Moreover, the sun can be relentless! So, basic items like sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses are crucial for your comfort.
There are several kiosks along the beachfront, but you might not always have time to stop during the tour to buy something. So, it’s better to bring a bottle of water with you.
As mentioned before, the Walking Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema lasts at least 2 hours and covers more than 4 kilometers.
Comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing are essential to ensure your well-being.
Finally, better safe than sorry, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast and bring a raincoat or umbrella if necessary!
Is it worth doing the Free Tour through Copacabana and Ipanema?
I always find guided tours to be worthy as they offer a chance to see a neighborhood or historical center from a fresh perspective.

Lastly, you can join a Walking Tour in the Urca Neighborhood, one of the most famous in town. This is where you’ll take the cable car to the Sugarloaf Mountain.
The tour offers a mix of culture, leisure, and a bit of adventure, as you’ll have a chance to visit Vermelha Beach and the start of Cláudio Coutinho walking trail.
This path provides beautiful viewpoints and leads to the first hill of the Sugarloaf complex. So, if you have extra time, you can explore it on your own after the walking tour.
