Looking for the best Foz do Iguaçu travel tips? You’re in the right place. While most visitors come to see the spectacular Iguazu Falls, there’s much more to discover in this unique destination on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
From deciding how many days to stay and which side of the falls to visit to exploring attractions like Bird Park and Itaipu Dam, a little planning can make all the difference.
In this post, you’ll find travel tips to help you plan your visit to Foz do Iguaçu and make the most of your time in the region.
Why visit Foz do Iguaçu?
Most people travel to Foz do Iguaçu to see Iguazu Falls. And while the waterfalls are undoubtedly the city’s biggest attraction, they’re far from being the only reason to visit.
Located on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, Foz do Iguaçu is the perfect base for exploring the region.
Besides visiting both sides of Iguazu Falls, you can spend time at Bird Park, visit Itaipu Dam, enjoy the sunset at the Three Borders Landmark or even cross the border for a day trip to Argentina or Paraguay.
One of the things I like most about Foz do Iguaçu is that there’s something for every type of traveller.
Whether you’re interested in nature, wildlife, engineering, local culture or simply taking things at a slower pace, you’ll find plenty to fill your itinerary.
With good tourist infrastructure and attractions that easily keep you busy for several days, Foz do Iguaçu is a destination that’s well worth exploring beyond the waterfalls.

How many days should you spend in Foz do Iguaçu?
Although it’s possible to visit Foz do Iguaçu in just one or two days, you’ll have a much better experience if you can stay a little longer.
Two full days are enough to visit the Brazilian and Argentinian sides of Iguazu Falls. If you have three or four days, you’ll also have time to explore attractions such as Bird Park, Itaipu Dam and the Three Borders Landmark without rushing.
If you’re planning to cross the border into Argentina or Paraguay, remember to factor in extra time for immigration procedures, especially during weekends and holidays.
When is the best time to visit Foz do Iguaçu?
There’s no bad time to visit Foz do Iguaçu. Each season has its own advantages, so the best time to go depends on the type of experience you’re looking for.
Spring and summer (roughly September to March) are usually warmer and rainier. This is also when Iguazu Falls tend to have the highest water volume, making the scenery even more impressive.

Autumn and winter (April to August) are generally drier, with milder temperatures and a lower chance of rainfall.
Although the waterfalls may not be as powerful, the weather is often more comfortable for exploring the parks and other attractions.
If you have flexibility when planning your trip, spring and autumn usually offer a good balance between weather conditions and water flow. That said, Foz do Iguaçu is a destination you can visit at any time of year.

How to get to Foz do Iguaçu?
The easiest way to reach Foz do Iguaçu is by flying into Foz do Iguaçu International Airport (IGU), located about 15 km (9 miles) from the city centre.
The airport receives direct flights from several major Brazilian cities, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Brasília.
If you’re travelling from Argentina, you can also fly into Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport (IGR) in Puerto Iguazú. From there, it’s a short drive across the border to Foz do Iguaçu.
No matter which option you choose, the journey between the airport and most hotels in downtown Foz do Iguaçu usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

Top attractions in Foz do Iguaçu
Although Iguazu Falls are the main reason most people visit Foz do Iguaçu, they’re only part of the experience. Depending on how much time you have, there are several other attractions worth including in your itinerary.
Visit Iguazu Falls
No trip to Foz do Iguaçu is complete without a visit to Iguazu Falls, listed among the New Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
One of the most common questions visitors ask is whether they should visit the Brazilian or the Argentinian side. My answer is always the same: if you have the time, visit both.
The Brazilian side is known for its panoramic views, while the Argentinian side takes you much closer through an extensive network of trails and walkways. Rather than choosing between them, think of the two parks as complementary experiences.
If you’d like to learn more about each park and how to plan your visit, I’ve written detailed guides for both the Brazilian and the Argentinian sides of Iguazu Falls.

Macuco Safari
Want to get closer to the waterfalls? Then don’t miss Macuco Safari.
The tour begins with an electric vehicle ride through the Atlantic Forest, followed by a short walk before boarding the boat that takes you close to the waterfalls.
There are different options available, depending on how adventurous you feel.

If you choose the complete experience, be prepared to get completely soaked.
Guess which one I chose? Hahaha…

If not, there’s also a lighter option that still lets you enjoy the scenery without going directly under the falls.

Bird Park
Located just a short walk from the entrance to Iguazu National Park, Bird Park is one of the attractions I recommend to everyone visiting Foz do Iguaçu.
Unlike a traditional zoo, the park focuses on the conservation of Atlantic Forest birds. Along the trail, you’ll walk through large aviaries where many species fly freely around visitors, creating a much more immersive experience.
Because of its location, Bird Park is easy to combine with the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls, making it a perfect addition to the same day’s itinerary.

Itaipu Dam
Known as one of the world’s largest hydroelectric power plants, Itaipu Dam is another attraction worth including in your itinerary.

There are several ways to visit, from the classic panoramic tour to more in-depth experiences that explore different areas of the dam.

If you’re interested in engineering or simply curious to see the scale of the project up close, it’s well worth the visit.

If your schedule allows, consider staying until the evening for the Itaipu Dam Light Show, when the structure is lit up in a special light show.

Three Borders Landmark
The Three Borders Landmark marks the meeting point of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, where the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers meet.

Besides the viewpoint, the complex offers cultural performances, restaurants and one of the most beautiful places in the city to watch the sunset. It’s an easy stop to include in your itinerary, especially at the end of the day.

Should you take a city tour?
If it’s your first time in Foz do Iguaçu or you’re short on time, a sightseeing tour can be a great way to discover some of the destination’s main attractions without worrying about transportation.
Depending on the itinerary, tours may include stops at places such as the Three Borders Landmark, Itaipu Dam and other landmarks around the city.
If you prefer exploring with a local guide, this can be a practical way to get an overview of Foz do Iguaçu before visiting the attractions on your own.

Gastronomic Experiences in Foz do Iguaçu
Foz do Iguaçu is a great destination for anyone who enjoys good food. Thanks to its location on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, you’ll have the opportunity to experience different cuisines during the same trip.
Besides trying traditional Brazilian dishes, I highly recommend setting aside at least one meal for an authentic Argentine steak.
If you’re visiting the Argentinian side of Iguazu Falls, consider having lunch in Puerto Iguazú before heading back to Brazil.
It’s a great opportunity to experience a traditional parrilla, and prices are often more affordable than in Brazil.
Back in Foz do Iguaçu, you’ll find everything from casual restaurants and local favourites to international cuisine.
Most of the city’s best dining options are concentrated in the downtown area, making it easy to end the day with a good meal after sightseeing.
If you enjoy trying local flavours when you travel, don’t limit yourself to the area around your hotel. Exploring different neighbourhoods and restaurants is part of the experience and one more reason to spend a few days in Foz do Iguaçu.
Tours around Foz do Iguaçu
One of the things that makes Foz do Iguaçu such an interesting destination is its location. Sitting on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, it’s easy to add new experiences to your itinerary without travelling long distances.
Visit Puerto Iguazú
Even if you’ve already visited the Argentinian side of Iguazu Falls, it’s worth spending some time in Puerto Iguazú.
The town has a relaxed atmosphere and is known for its excellent steakhouses, making it a great place to enjoy a traditional Argentine meal before returning to Brazil.
Shopping in Paraguay
If shopping is part of your travel plans, Ciudad del Este is just across the Friendship Bridge. The city is well known for its shopping centres, electronics and imported goods, attracting visitors from all over South America.
If you decide to cross the border, remember to check the current duty-free allowance and import regulations before making any purchases.
Duty Free Shop Puerto Iguazú
If you’re looking for international brands without spending hours shopping in Ciudad del Este, the Duty Free Shop in Puerto Iguazú is another good option.
